vs1063 latency

Post by rich » Thu 2011-07-07 12:56

Hi Panu,

I'm Interested in using the VS1063 chip in a real time audio link application, what is the anticipated latency when encoding an audio signal (mono, 8 kHz bandwidth) into an mp3 encoded signal ?
Do you have a comparison between it and other compression algorithms?
When will I be able to buy a dev board?
What is the cost of board ?
What is cost of chip?

Hi!

I think we will have some kind of evaluation board of VS1063 in the end of the year. Until then, VS1053 boards can be used. For development, currently the VS1053 prototyping board can be used, but we are planning a new developer board for VS1063 for next year. I hope we will have prototyping boards fitted with VS1063 available soon from the web shop.

When the sample rate is low, such as 8 kilobits, the latency of any encoder is quite high. It's because a whole block of samples need to be ready before the encoding can begin. Sorry, I don't know what the latency will be. Perhaps some of the other guys have an idea about this. Henrik?

Hi Panu / Henrik,

Just to be clear I was asking about the mp3 latency on a 8 kHz audio bandwidth signal not 8 kbps. I actually am interested in the decode latency also. As you appreciate this is very important in realtime wireless links in which the audio is then put through a PA.
