Flash compatibility: S34ML01G1 with S34ML01G2

Flash compatibility: S34ML01G1 with S34ML01G2

Post by Arek » Mon 2017-08-28 11:18

Hi,
For new designs Cypress recommended insteed of S34ML01G1 use a newer generation S34ML01G2.
Infos how to migrate from G1 to G2 could be found:
http://www.cypress.com/file/196891/download
Question:
Do you expect any problems using VS1005 with G2?
(only G2 is available in BGA67 which I plan to use)

thanks and best regards

Hi!

I'm sorry, I have no idea. Personally I'd think it would work but one can never be sure. For the TSSOP package (normal) we could test it here in a test socket if you would send it to us, but we don't have a test socket for a BGA package. You'll just have to test it. If it doesn't work then I'll of course do whatever I can to help make it work.

Hi Panu,

one flash S34ML01G2 in TSOP-48 package is on the way to you.

Hi Panu,

have you got the flash memory?

Hi!

Ah, yes, received, thank you. I've given them first to one of our engineers to test initially with our board to have some preliminary results before I personally take a look. I'll get you some results by the end of next week as I'm out of office for a few days.

Hi!

Ok, done initial tests. Our low level NandPhysical routines work ok with this chip, but our more advanced higher level mapper routines (e.g. Purity) does not work because Purity expects a 4k page size.

If I remember/understand correctly, you use the low level routines to access the flash...?

Hi All,

..."does not work because Purity expects a 4k page size."
I've checked both data sheets again.

S34ML01G1
http://www.cypress.com/file/207521/download
3.2 Page program
"A page program cycle consists of a serial data loading period in which up to 2112 bytes (×8) or 1056 words (×16) of data may be loaded into the data register, followed by a non-volatile programming period where the loaded data is programmed into the appropriate cell."

And for generation 2 memory S34ML01G2:
http://www.cypress.com/file/218306/download
3.2 Page program
"A page program cycle consists of a serial data loading period in which up to 2 KB (×8) or 1 kword (×16) of data may be loaded into the data register, followed by a non-volatile programming period where the loaded data is programmed into the appropriate cell."

or perhaps directly (see p. 1) in both data sheets:
G1:
– Page size: – x8 = 2112 (2048 + 64) bytes; 64 bytes is spare area

G2:
– Page size:–×8: (2048 + 64) bytes; 64-byte spare area

So from my point of view, they looks near the same(???) or perhaps I've overseen something...

With best regards
AM

That's right, they are similar. Purity (working name for the new driver) does not work with either one, but the old nand physical drivers work. But since you don't use Purity, you need not worry.
